Rating on Amazon

garmin-vivofit-best-buyOn Amazon, the product enjoys a very good rating of 3.7 out of 5, which is a proof of how reliable the product is. So, for Garmin Vivofit best buy, you may want to head to Amazon.

Basically, the Garmin Vivofit fitness brand is a pedometer for your wrist, which counts steps, distance travelled and estimated number of calories burned. Apart from this, the gadget shows the number of steps left and the time. Other features include tracking sleep and monitoring heart rate non-stop when in contact with ANT+ wireless heart rate monitors. You can buy one separately or get one that comes with Vivofit for a total price of $169.

You can synchronize the band with your iOS or Android phone through Bluetooth 4.0 and other tablets via the Garmin Connect app. Alternatively, you can use a cordless USB dongle connected to a PC or Mac.

And there is a special feature: a red bar shows up if you have been sitting around for an hour and continues to grows gradually every fifteen minutes. The bar will disappear if you walk around for a bit. Now, let us take a look at this product by reading the rest of Garmin Vivofit fitness brand review.

Design

garmin-vivofit-best-buying-offerIf you are looking for a fitness tracker that will fit on your arm, nothing beats Vivofit. The band is made of rubber and is flexible. As far as design is concerned, it looks more like the Fitbit Flex and fits the wrist very well. No matter how hard you run, it won’t come off your wrist.

At 25.5g, the device is light. For your convenience, the box contains two band sizes. And you can use the band with a variety of color straps costing an extra 20 Euros. The gadget is designed in a way that it doesn’t get damaged in water, so don’t take it off when you head for shower or swimming pool. You can go down up to 50m in water without the fear of damaging your gadget.

Usability

Fitbit-Flex-and-fitsIt’s easy to use the tracker. The gadget makes use of an accelerometer for sensing motion in the same way it’s competitors do. Since the price is just 99 Euros, the gadget has no GPS, which is not a big deal. But the big disappointment is the absence of an altimeter to spot the point where you will be burning more calories. However, you can track other activities, such as cycling and running but you don’t need to enter or import them manually.

Besides ANT Plus compatibility for heart rate monitor, you have Bluetooth for synchronization to a mobile phone, but you need to do it manually. About storage: Garmin offered no details about the onboard storage, but you can store up to 30 days worth of data.

The Vivofit features a couple ways to keep your motivation level up. The first method is known as the Inactivity Bar: the red line that shows up at the upper part of the screen when you stay idle for one full hour. The green bar keeps on growing until you get up and take a little walk. It’s something like the alarms on the popular Jawbone UP24. But this bar is not as effective as an alarm. So, this is another downside of the product.

The custom goals is another method to spur on you to move on. On first use, you can choose a target count. Once you have met your daily goal, the gadget will increase the count to push you to move on. The target will be made easier if you fail to meet the first goal.

Performance

Performance-wise, I faced a few problems with the Vivofit. With the ANT Plus receiver, the gadget takes a lot of attempts in order to connect to a computer running Windows 8. With this, the smartphone app gives no help. the app didn’t connect when I tried to synch with my Samsung Galaxy S5. At the end, I was able to connect it to my Nexus 5. However, the frequent attempts to sync the data caused the app to crash.

As far as the step counters goes, the gadget has some discrepancies. But the difference is not very large. The real problem is with the calorie count, and the result is very inaccurate. We compared the results with the Jawbone UP24 and the difference in result was substantial. So, the gadget is a bit inaccurate and hence not that reliable.

And let’s check out the sleep tracking feature. Honestly speaking, this feature is as useless as that of Fuelband SE. This feature won’t tell if you have had sound sleep by monitoring your movement while you are asleep. As far as accuracy is concerned, the Withings Pulse 02 and the Jawbone UP24 are much better.

The greatest advantage of the Vivofit is its battery life. The battery of the device is almost flawless. You don’t need to charge the device with a charger or through a USB port of your PC as it takes a pair of CR1632 button cells. One pair of cells will last up to one full year before a replacement is required. Compared to the battery life of Fitbit Zip tracker, the battery of the Vivofit lasts an extra 6 months.

Value

So, now you might be thinking if it is worth the price to go for the Garmin Vivofit. Should you buy the Garmin Vivofit? Well, you have two solid reason to go for it. First, you don’t need to take out your phone just to monitor your progress and you don’t need to worry about its battery getting too low. No matter how much you use the gadget, the battery will last one year as long as you use it when you need it.

The absence of backlight is a bit annoying but the worst part is the trouble with attempts to synchronize and upload the data. Moreover, as a fitness tracker motivating you to keep up, the personalized goals do a better job compared to the inactivity bar, which is something you cannot find in other trackers.

At the price tag of $77.99, the gadget competes with the FitBit Flex. Both of the gadget have a lot in common, such as design and sync options with smartphone or desktop computer. But the differentiating point is that the Vivofit offers a lot more built-in stuff to keep your motivation levels up. And you can use these features with a good heart monitor. To upload and digest data, the ecosystem of the Fitbit does a much better job. Besides, you will find it a lot easier to get along with this system.

With an in-built display and a long battery life, this is the best fitness tracker you can get your hands on. But if you have no need for the display screen, you can probably go for the Jawbone UP24, which provides more detailed data and is a lot attractive with respect to design.

The Vivofit may not have the cool factor of Nike's FuelBand, or some of the features found in the Fitbit Flex or Jawbone Up24, but what it does offer is reliable tracking, useful reports and a durable design.
