TomTom Runner GPS Watch Review

This is a TomTom runner GPS watch review, and it is going to shed some light on the design, usability, performance and value of this watch. With this little gadget, you can track your performance outdoors or on a treadmill. The data can be uploaded to the TomTom MySports site or any other running website.

Let us now take a look at the TomTom Runner GPS watch review and read up on the design, usability, performance and value of the device.

Design

The gadget has a beautiful display and easy-to-use menu system. There are two parts of the watch: watch images (1)module and a One Touch control surrounding the GPS receiver. On the display, you can press the three dots for activating the backlight.

The control pad and display can be removed from the rubber watchstrap for charging in the charging dock. The in-built USB feature is no more, which is a disappointment.
The watch weighs 50g and is water resistant in a depth of up to 50m. So, if you forget to take it off before a shower, no problem. Another problem with the watch is that the watch part is a bit loose in the strap and may fall out easily.

Performance

First of all, you should download the TomTom MySports Connect app off the website and enter the details, such as your age, height, weight measurement units and some watch settings. And then you need to configure the QuickGPS function too.

Upon pressing the left button on the pad, the battery status, software version, QuickGPS status and internal storage status will show up.

Before you start running, tap the right button for choosing whether you want to run on a treadmill or outside. Tap right again to choose from Race modes, Zones, Laps 6and Goals. The Race section has pre-set challenges, such as a 5k in 20 minutes and a 10k in 50 minutes.

In GPS mode, TomTom claims that the watch will be good for up to 10 hours on one charge. The battery life will increase on watch mode and decrease on GPS mode while backlight is on and accessories, such as heart rate monitor are connected. The battery life is not very impressive.

Usability

The display screen is composed of 3 sets of digits. You will see current time, heart rate, stride length, distance, duration, and average pace on the large display. For changing the display, tap the down button.
For me, the GPS receiver took about 30 seconds for synchronization. In my first attempt, it had taken about 5 minutes to get a signal. For improving accuracy, TomTom suggests that you should synchronize the QuickGPSFix signal with a gap of 2-3 days. So, as far as usability goes, this is a little problem I faced with this gadget.

Moreover, the watch doesn’t fit tightly inside the strap and may get loose and fall down while you are running. You may not want to lose your precious watch, will you? So, this is another usability issue with the device.

You can go to the TomTom MySports site for uploading data. All you have to do is connect the watch module to the dock and the transfer of data will be initiated. The dashboard and account settings are user friendly too.

Value

On Amazon, the gadget is priced at $129. At this price, the watch is worth it as it comes with a big screen, lots of features, comfortable design and adequate battery life. images (2)Compared to other watches offered by competitors, this watch is reasonably priced.

Long story short, the runner has impressive battery life in the GPS mode. The watch is ideal for those who are runners, but is not suitable for sensors or cycling for counting laps. If you want these features, you may want to go for a more expensive watch.

Some people say that you can download a running app, such as Runkeeper and Endromondo on your phone and enable the GPS feature, and your phone will start collecting the same type of data. We think that the app will drain your phone battery much faster than you think. Plus, you may have to keep your phone with you, and a phone is heavier than a watch. So, it is a bit inconvenient to carry a phone while running.

 Other Features

The TomTom Runner GPS watch comes with an in-built sensor and accelerometer that allow you to run outside or on a treadmill and track the required information. The watch allows you to view pace, distance, stride length, average pace, lap times and calories burned in real-time. With Bluetooth Smart, you can synchronize the gadget with other devices, such as a heart rate strap for training in certain running zones. If you want to run 10km, for instance, the Runner will show your progress in % as well.

And yes, the app does show you the time and sounds an alarm when you are out of the set zone. This is a great feature that some watches don’t come with.
So, the conclusion we got from this TomTom GPS watch review is that if you are a serious runner, you may want to go for this watch instead of downloading a running app on your phone.

TechRadar

Overall rating is 4 out of 5.

“TomTom’s watch is purely about the fitness focus; there are none of the extra whizzes and bangs you’ll be finding in the array of smartwatches looming on the horizon. But with its unobtrusive, lightweight design and respectable price tag, the Runner is strong on features that make it a quality companion for both the keen and amateur runner alike.”

Conclusion

“After a previous partnership with Nike, TomTom is now running solo with the first fitness watch they can call their very own. With years of experience in creating GPS devices for consumers, it should be no surprise that the Runner has what TrustedReviews calls a “foolproof menu system.” TomTom even built their own portal to use with the Runner, but it’s still in beta and Pocket-Lint says the “site is woeful in what it allows you to do and the level of data it gives you compared to the competition.” While pleased overall with TomTom’s first solo watch effort, DC Rainmaker has concerns over the use of Bluetooth Smart instead of ANT+, saying “there’s just a lot of athletes that have ANT+ gear, and there’s very little Bluetooth Smart variety (or product) in the market today.”
